When can dispersal synchronize populations?

چکیده

While spatial synchrony of oscillating populations has been observed in many ecological systems, the causes of this phenomenon are still not well understood. The most common explanations have been the Moran effect (synchronous external stochastic influences) and the effect of dispersal among populations. Since ecological systems are typically subject to large spatially varying perturbations which destroy synchrony, a plausible mechanism explaining synchrony must produce rapid convergence to synchrony. We analyze the dynamics through time of the synchronizing effects of dispersal and, consequently, determine whether dispersal can be the mechanism which produces synchrony. Specifically, using methods new to ecology, we analyze a two patch predator-prey model, with identical weak dispersal between the patches. We find that a difference in time scales (i.e. one population has dynamics occurring much faster than the other) between the predator and prey species is the most important requirement for fast convergence to synchrony.

Mutualism fails when climate response differs between interacting species.

Successful species interactions require that both partners share a similar cue. For many species, spring warming acts as a shared signal to synchronize mutualist behaviors. Spring flowering plants and the ants that disperse their seeds respond to warming temperatures so that ants forage when plants drop seeds. However, where warm-adapted ants replace cold-adapted ants, changes in this timing mi...

Nonlinear Effect of Dispersal Rate on Spatial Synchrony of Predator-Prey Cycles

Spatially-separated populations often exhibit positively correlated fluctuations in abundance and other population variables, a phenomenon known as spatial synchrony. Generation and maintenance of synchrony requires forces that rapidly restore synchrony in the face of desynchronizing forces such as demographic and environmental stochasticity. One such force is dispersal, which couples local pop...

ارزیابی پیوستگی سیمای سرزمین و کریدورهای مهاجرتی آهوی گواتردار در مناطق مرکزی ایران

Long-term survival of Goitered gazelles in central Iran has been threatened because of isolation of existing populations and genetic threats. Effective management of these small and isolated populations needs to evaluate landscape connectivity among core habitat patches. In the present study, resistance surfaces were mapped as a function of twelve uncorrelated variables using species distributi...

Ecological processes can synchronize marine population dynamics over continental scales.

Determining the relative importance of local and regional processes for the distribution of population abundance is a fundamental but contentious issue in ecology. In marine systems, classical theory holds that the influence of demographic processes and dispersal is confined to local populations whereas the environment controls regional patterns of abundance. Here, we use spatial synchrony to c...

Chaos, Dispersal and Extinction in Coupled Ecosystems.

The role of chaos in population dynamics has been a matter of discussion and controversy. To some authors, chaotic dynamics together with environmental stochasticity should increase the probability of population extinction (Berryman & Millstein, 1989). But later studies consistently showed that coupled populations can in fact avoid global extinction by means of chaotic dynamics (Allen et al., 1...
